It invariably troubles me to discover that there are moms and dads using sleep drugs for getting baby to sleep. Not necessarily just for baby's welfare but for the parents too. We know sleep medication can be unsafe for infants and young children and will probably not even be effective.

Getting baby to sleep is the family's main goal when they are tired which is the reason why some decide to offer their baby "a little something to help him sleep". But your child might be in for a lifetime of sleeping pill dependence. As an adult he might forever be stuck with a poor sleep routine.

There has been no screening on the effects of sleeping medications on babies. In the case of some over-the-counter medications containing histamines (Nytol or Sominex) the effects can be reversed and they can act as a stimulant. As you may imagine, getting baby to sleep using these drugs is virtually impossible.

Parents who give their babies chemical sleep aids are usually at their wits end and ought to have a bit of sympathy. Every parent with a restive baby is incessantly looking for ways to help that baby sleep. Hundreds of dollars are invested annually with just one aim - getting baby to sleep.

The primary challenges in this area are:

Baby naps all day but remains awake all night.

Baby falls asleep but won't stay asleep.

Their baby gets infuriated and upset at bedtimes and won't settle.

Full time mums can usually cope ok as they can catch up with some rest in the course of the day. However if you're trying to hold down a full time career, you may well find the situation unbearable.

If you're one of these parents identified above then this was prepared primarily for you, so don't fret, because there is an answer to the sleeping pill trap and it likely isn't as traumatic as you believe.

Here are some tips you can try for getting baby to sleep...

The "cry it out" approach - Warning, some moms and dads find this difficult! It requires leaving your baby to cry for a pre-arranged amount of time before going to see to him. After a few days, hold out a bit longer before going in to comfort him. Tough love perhaps, but it does work! Eventually baby will understand that his crying isn't really getting him anywhere so he gives up and goes to sleep.

Now I understand that's probably not everyone's idea of good parenting. However in the long run you'll be giving your baby the gift of being able to put himself to sleep.

Establish a sleep routine - Even a very simple one works well. A bath followed by a cuddle and a short bedtime story will do the trick. You should not include rousing activities such as games into the schedule and do everything exactly the same and at the same time each night.

Holistic remedies - If you're a busy parent this can be the most effective option. Natural and alternative solutions are a safer and more efficient choice for getting baby to sleep.
